Born in Lubbock in 1957 I started out with a
curiosity that often got me in trouble.
Watching my father work as a pediatrician
gave me a window into caring for people.
When not in the assistant principal's office
I enjoyed playing trumpet and challenging
authority. As I graduated high school I was
told to "find work" as I was not college
material with my low grades and poor test
scores. I started at Texas Tech and, once I
realized that I wasn't stupid, I simplified
my life and greatly improved my academic
scores. I later graduated with almost
perfect grades in both my Master's and
Doctoral programs. I have lived in
Indiana, Temple, Dallas, and finally
returned to Lubbock in 1990. I am most
pleased to return to my hometown and work
with my community. I just hope that I don't
run into my old assistant principal.
